#15. MONOPOLY
Elizabeth Magie wanted to teach the world about the unfairness of land-grabbing, so she created The Landlord's Game to spread the economic theory of Georgism. She focused on showing the disadvantages of renting, and the need for a single land value tax on owners. Fun stuff right! Magie patented the board game in 1904 and self-published it in 1906. Nearly 30 years later, a man named Charles Darrow rejiggered the board design and message and sold it to Parker Brothers as Monopoly. The company bought Maggie's patent for the original game for $500 and no royalties. So basically, Maggie created what is arguably the most popular game in the world, and only received a one time payment of $500 measly dollars. But we're sure Maggie was proud of her accomplishment in creating an educational yet exciting game, even if she was screwed over in the process.
