2.1 Past Simple

Form:

Positive: Sub + Verb2 (Past) + (Object)………………

Ex:

- We went to the theater last night.

- Mr. Pisey used to smoke ten cigarettes per day.

- She often got up at 8 o’clock.

Negative : Sub + did + not + verb (bare infinitive) + (object)………………

Ex:

- We did not go to the theater last night.

- Mr. Pisey did not used to smoke ten cigarettes per day.

- She did not often got up at 8 o’clock.

Question : Did + sub + verb (bare infinitive) + (object)………………….

Ex:

- Did we did not go to the theater last night ?

- Did Mr. Pisey did not used to smoke ten cigarettes per day ?

- Did she did not often got up at 8 o’clock ?

Use : We use the Simple Past tense to express:

1/ A past action the is now finished.

He escaped into the crowd yesterday.
The polices caught tow thieves last month.
2/ Action which follow each other in the story.

3/ A past state or habit.

When she was a pupil, she lived in a big flat by the river.
Note : We often use “Use to” for a habit .

I used to smoke a packet of cigarettes per day.
He used to play tennis with me.


Positive :

I + was + playing tennis

 You , We , They + were + playing tennis

He ,She ,It  +  was + playing tennis

Negative :

I + was + not +playing tennis

 You , We , They + were + not + playing tennis

He ,She ,It  +  was + not + playing tennis

Short Question

- Were they dancing at 8:00 last night ?
